From rebuilding historic railway crossings to closing the final gaps, G2G is working with communities and partners to create a safer, more accessible and more continuous 132-kilometre trail.

Every project is at a different stage.
Some are moving toward construction, some are in design, and others remain important long-term priorities.

Wallenstein · Powell Road to Line 86

Conestogo River Bridge

A new two-span trail bridge will eliminate one of the G2G's most significant road detours and reconnect the Kissing Bridge Trailway.

Project details

Current status

Waterloo Regional Council approved the recommended design in April 2026. Detailed design, environmental approvals, permitting and funding agreements continue.

What's next

Complete the Environmental Assessment and remaining agreements, then tender the construction contract.

Expected timing

Tender targeted for fall 2026. Construction anticipated in 2027, subject to approvals and tender.

Guelph · Woodlawn Road to Silvercreek

Bridge the Gap — Guelph Gateway

A dedicated, accessible connection will replace an uncomfortable on-road route and create a true eastern gateway to the full G2G.

Project details

Current status

Detailed design is advancing alongside environmental work, permitting, wetland review, land access and coordination with the City and rail partners.

What's next

Complete design and approvals, establish construction costs, secure remaining funding and prepare for tender.

Expected timing

Working toward construction in 2027, subject to approvals and funding.

Smith Creek / Milverton Bridge

A replacement crossing would return the trail to its historic rail alignment and eliminate a difficult road-based break.

Current status

A preliminary design is complete. Engineering work is reviewing the bridge configuration, existing railway abutment, trail approaches and permitting.

What's next

Confirm the preferred configuration and costs, then advance detailed design, approvals and funding.

Expected timing

Preliminary design and approvals are underway. No construction date has been established.

Planning

Concept for a trail crossing beneath Line 86

Line 86 Grade-Separated Crossing

The preferred long-term solution would keep walkers and cyclists on the corridor and carry the trail safely beneath busy Line 86.

Project details

Current status

Preliminary engineering has demonstrated a potential box-culvert tunnel. Partner discussions are the next step toward updated investigations and design.

What's next

Confirm roles, update technical investigations and costing, and advance engineering and funding discussions.

Expected timing

Planning stage. No construction date has been established.

These crossings matter deeply, but they are clearly separated from active delivery projects so the page never overpromises.

The former railway bridge is gone, leaving a substantial road detour. Updated engineering, approvals, partnerships and a funding strategy are required before construction can be planned.

Grand River Crossing — West Montrose

A dedicated crossing would remove the local-road detour and create a safer, more accessible connection through the Kissing Bridge Trailway.

Recent capital success

Blyth Tunnel restoration

The restored tunnel returned the G2G to its historic railway alignment beneath the roadway west of Blyth, eliminating a steep crossing and creating a safer, more accessible experience.

It is a strong example of what long-term partnership and community support can accomplish.
